Deng Makuey

Born in South Sudan and raised in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, Deng Makuey arrived in the U.S. in 2001, carrying the weight of war and experiencing displacement at just 10 years old. Years later, a split-second decision led to a robbery conviction that changed the course of his life. He served nearly six years in prison—time that forced deep reflection and gave him space to reimagine his future.

Following personal losses, including the death of his father and best friend, Deng knew he needed a fresh start. That opportunity came when a friend introduced him to Urban Alchemy. Skeptical at first, Deng quickly discovered that the work was about far more than a paycheck – it was about purpose.

Today, as the LOVE Team Lead at Clinton Triangle, Deng walks up to 12 miles a day alongside his team, distributing supplies like hygiene kits, snacks, and warm gear to unhoused neighbors. His goal is simple: to make sure no one feels invisible. “We stop for everyone,” he says. “No matter who you are, we ask if you’re okay.”

For Deng, the most meaningful moments come from connection, like the day he helped a woman with scoliosis move off the streets and into a tiny home, or the ongoing conversations he had with a former shelter guest, encouraging him not to give up.

Deng pours his energy into the community, and in return, he leans on music to recharge. “This work can be heavy,” he says. “But music is my safe zone. And helping others rebuild their lives helps me continue rebuilding my own.”
